While you are building the model when you run into an issue use the help documentation (use it!) to try and solve errors as the arise. Don’t get to hung up on your input numbers, estimations are totally fine just get something built. Pick a process in your organization or a made up scenario and try modeling it. Now that you have gone through the tutorials multiple times it is time to start a project. You are going to learn more the more the model is broken. In this case breaking the model is a great thing. If you break the model over try and use the tutorial instructions and the help documentation (Press F1) to make your change be a proper fix. The purpose of this is for you to gain a deeper understanding of what you are actually doing when you drop in a new block or write a piece of code.

These are the steps I took to become highly proficient at modeling and make it my full time career. I did not learn modeling in College I knew a bit of Java but that was about it. Deciding to learn a new computer program is a big decision, but learning the basics of simulation modeling is a fun skill to learn and useful whether you are seeking a job as a modeler, want to be a more informed client/end user, or exploring whether this technology is something that will add value to your business.
